Alumni of U of M Support LEAD Scholars
New Jersey native Jamie Simon is a realtor for Keller Williams in her hometown of Wayne. Prior to her successful career in real estate, Jamie Simon-Wainick earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree at Columbia University. Nationally recognized as a pioneering contributor to research in the field of psychology, the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan prepares undergraduates to continue their studies in a number of related fields. As a member of the Alumni Association of the university, Jamie Simon supports her alma mater’s efforts to maintain its long tradition of academic excellence.
In order to continue the traditions of leadership, excellence, achievement, and diversity (LEAD) at the University of Michigan, the alumni association launched the LEAD scholarship program in 2008. To date, the program has financially supported 300 academically gifted students of African American, Latino, or Native American descent.
The merit-based LEAD scholarship program awards a minimum of $5,000 per year to underrepresented incoming freshmen. In addition to financial support, the students benefit from a peer mentor program, opportunities for networking with alumni, career guidance, and study groups.
To demonstrate the alumni association’s continued commitment to supporting diversity at the University of Michigan, the group set aside $30 million for future LEAD scholarships. The organization aims to support 75 scholars per year with annual scholarships of $5,000 to $15,000 by the year 2021.

What You Need to Know Before Financing Your Home
Well-known in New Jersey real estate, Jamie Simon-Wainick recently signed on with Keller Williams in Wayne, NJ. In addition to presenting quality homes to buyers and sellers, Jamie Simon-Wainick knows the fine points of financing and purchasing.
Prospective owners should familiarize themselves with three dimensions of homebuying:
- Pre-approval from the lender. As opposed to pre-qualification, which is simply a quick financial snapshot, pre-approval is based on your income, credit history, and debt level. This information helps you understand how much house you can afford and encourages sellers to take your offer seriously.
- Mortgage considerations. Traditional wisdom has been to pay back your mortgage as soon as possible. Today however, most buyers have incurred substantial credit card balances and possibly student loan debt. Choosing a 30-year over a 15-year mortgage results in lower monthly payments; you can pay extra on the principal when you have more money.
Another smart move is to pay additional interest points at closing to get a lower repayment rate. This benefits families who stay in their home a long time.
- Learn before you bid. Before making your offer, uses websites like Zillow to find out prices for neighboring homes. If homes in the area have gone for less than the asking price, trim your offer accordingly.
